Berlin Voices
2010 was a special year for native Berliner Sarah Kaiser:
Her fourth Solo-Album GRÜNER entitled appeared in October 2010 on the renowned Mannheimer Label JAZZ'n'ARTS of trumpeter Thomas Siffling. With her JAZZ'n'ARTS debut album Sarah takes a turn in her career: all songs are composed by her musical partner Samuel Jersak and her, some together with the band. And most of the 11 songlyrics were written by Sarah Kaiser herself. "This record is my most personal work so far. Original lyrics in German are rather unusual in the jazz scene of this country. Plus the reduced, honest, direct music which almost feels "naked" to me", she explains. In the studio with Sarah were Samuel Jersak on Fender Rhodes who also acted at composer, arranger and co-producer for GRÜNER, as well as Tommy Baldu on Drums and Martin Simon on double bass. The finishing touch on several arrangements were given by Thomas Siffling (trumpet), Uli Röser (trombone) and Olaf Schönborn (Saxophone), who also accompanies the band live whenever possible. When asked about GRÜNER and the meaning of the band, Sarah Kaiser says: "We wanted a reduced instrumentation with fender rhodes, double bass and drums as a basis. This at times felt like walking a tight rope to me. But this is exactly what makes the record so exciting. Every musician's personality is important here, and my voice has much room for breathing."
But where did it all start? IN the 1970s in Berlin - Sarah was born into a musician's family and thus breathed music right with her first breath. After studying English Writing (BA) in the USA and Jazz Singing (diploma) in London at the Royal Academy of music and Berlin (Academy of Music Hanns Eisler), she published her debut album in 2003: "GAST AUF ERDEN - Paul Gerhardt neu entdeckt" was quite a revelation in Germany. It contains 350-year old lyrics of Germany's best known church-hymn-writer Paul Gerhardt, but musically totally new, arranged in an acoustic Soul-Jazz-Style. GAST AUF ERDEN to this day remains a great success having sold over 27.000 copies by late 2010. 2005 MIRACLES followed, an album with a strong jazz approach, containing both Sarahs cover versions of well known Jazz- and Popsongs as well als original compositions. 2007 Sarah released her third album GEISTESGEGENWART.
Over the past 10 years, Sarah has toured extensively throughout Germany and beyond. She has been invited to play at the German Bundestag, at varied Jazzfestivals such as the Jazztage Dresden, has share the stage with renowned singers such as Heinz-Rudolf Kunze (Ferropolis) or die Prinzen) and has played at all Evangelischen Kirchentagen of the last decade. She has toured such exotic countries as Aserbaidschan and Saudi-Arabia. 2004, Sarah was awarded the "Best of 2003" artist's award at the Promikon Artist's Fair. She has regular appearances on radio and TV (ARD, ZDF, RBB, Deutschlandfunk, Groove FM and more). She founded and led the Gospelchoir Soul 2 Soul til 2007, a social/cultural project in Berlin-Marzah, one of Berlin's poorest districts. Sarah Kaiser teaches Pop Singing at the C-Seminar / UdK Berlin, leads national and international Seminars and Workshops for Singers and Choirs, covering topics such as Gospel music, voice and improvisation and is asked to do quite a bit of studio work.
Next to the Sarah Kaiser Band, Sarah is also part of the vocal jazz quartett Berlin Voices (Sarah Kaiser, Esther Kaiser, Marc Secara, Kristofer Benn) who sing a perfect 4-part harmony in the tradition of great vocal groups such as Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices and Take Six, combining modern jazz with pop, soul, Gospel and classical elements.
